Congratulations to Rose Kofron for being awarded the 2017 Iowa LICA Conservation Award. This project involved building 17 acres of waterways and the associated tiling, seeding, and installation of erosion blanket on all waterways. The main waterway was up to 134 feet wide.
Bruce Barnhart, Iowa LICA contractor, has been working with Rose and Kofron Farms since the early 1990s. Rose has always been very conservation minded and willing to spend money to improve the farm. With this particular project her operators, Larry and Lesa Regennitter, were very involved. Larry attended all the planning meetings, which were numerous, and helped supervise the construction as well as doing all the seeding.
Johnson County is focusing on improving water quality in the Rapid Creek Watershed. Kofron Farms is at the very beginning of the watershed with approximately 500 acres of their land draining into the watershed. The goal was to improve water quality, as well as reducing soil erosion. To help the vegetation get established and prevent erosion the specs called for the center 1/2 to 2/3rds of the waterway width to be covered with erosion blanket, which is a significant additional expense, but helps protect the work that has been done. We were told that this was the biggest NRCS conservation project ever done in Johnson County. Fellow LICA Contractor, Shawn Yoder of Advanced Tiling and Trenching, did the tile installation.
